The challenge

The homeowners wanted an EV charger and were planning a heat pump. The original panel was full, used several tandem breakers and showed heat discolouration on one bus connection.

Our approach

  1. Load calculation covering the existing house, the charger and the planned heat pump.
  2. Permit application and utility coordination for a service upgrade.
  3. Panel, meter base and service entrance replaced in one day, with the utility reconnecting the same afternoon.
  4. Every circuit traced and labelled; the overloaded kitchen circuit split in two.

Scope of work

  • 200A main panel with 40 spaces
  • New meter base and service entrance cable
  • Grounding electrode system brought up to current code
  • AFCI/GFCI protection on required circuits
  • Dedicated 50A circuit ready for the EV charger

Outcome

The home now has spare capacity and spare spaces. The charger was installed the following week on the circuit left ready for it.
